The name Navasana comes from the Sanskrit words "nava" (meaning "boat") and "asana" (meaning "pose"). Benefits of Boat Pose: 1. Tones and strengthens your abdominal muscles. 2. Improves balance and digestion. 3. Stretches your hamstrings. 4. Strengthens your spine and hip flexors. 5. Stimulates the kidneys, thyroid and prostate glands, and intestines. 6. Aids in stress relief. To enter the pose from sitting, the knees are bent, and the body's weight is shifted back until the soles of the feet lift off the ground. In the pose, the body is balanced on the sitting bones, not leaning right back on to the tailbone. The spine is lengthened to broaden and lift the chest. Do not practice this yoga pose if you have low blood pressure, severe headache, migraine, or if you have suffered from some chronic diseases or spinal disorders in the recent past.
